R.A. Millikan is best known for a seven year study, completed in 1913, in which he measured the charge on the electron. This was done by determining the charge on tiny oil drops, charged with free electrons and suspended by an electric field. These famous "oil drop experiments" eventually lead to his winning the Nobel prize in 1923.
