Styrofoam Atomic s-Orbital

This is a very simple set of instructions for building a model of an s-atomic orbital using craft store supplies. It is a good visual aide to use when describing three-dimensional boundary surface diagrams.  This model will compliment nicely our p-orbital and d-orbital models described in other links.

Materials

Materials

A styrofoam ball approximately 4 inches in diameter.
A 3 inch length of 1/8 in. dowel rod.
A 4 inch length of 1x4 board.
Sandpaper and glue
Drill and 1/8 in. bit

Assembly

One by four peg.

Drill a vertical hole in the center of the 1x4 board.  Sand the board smooth.  Sharpen one end of the dowel and glue it, sharp end up, in the hole.

Add a few drops of glue to the peg and push the styrofoam ball on it until it touches the base.   Be sure to get the ball centered.  Add a label and your s-orbital model is ready for display.
