Karl Wilhelm Scheele
1742 - 1786

In 1772, two years before Priestley published his work, Scheele discovered oxygen.  He called it "fire air".  He didn't publish this discovery until 1777; therefore, Priestley is given credit.  Scheele discovered chlorine, manganese, and barium in 1774 but was not given credit for any of them.  He also was the first to isolate many organic acids.
