Alessandro Volta
1745 - 1827

In 1799 Alessandro Volta invented the Voltaic pile, the first battery.  It consisted of a stack, or pile, of alternating disks of zinc and copper separated by felt soaked in brine.  The Voltaic pile revolutionized the use of electricity and gave the world the electric current.  Also of interest, in 1778, Volta studied inflammable air from marshes and discovered methane.
